The Five Basic Needs Behind the LifeFit Matrix™
The LifeFit Matrix is grounded in William Glasser’s Choice Theory, which proposes that human behavior is organized around efforts to satisfy five basic needs.
The LifeFit Matrix uses contemporary language for those needs:
Safety & Security
The need for physical well-being, stability, predictability, resources, and a sense of safety.
Significance
The need to matter, accomplish, contribute, be recognized, influence, and experience a sense of personal worth.
Freedom
The need for autonomy, independence, choice, flexibility, and room to direct your own life.
Connection
The need for love, belonging, friendship, intimacy, community, and meaningful relationships.
Joy
The need for fun, enjoyment, play, learning, curiosity, creativity, and experiences that make life feel alive.
Choice Theory traditionally refers to these needs as survival, power, freedom, love and belonging, and fun. The LifeFit Matrix uses Safety & Security, Significance, Freedom, Connection, and Joy to make the concepts more immediately understandable while retaining the underlying theoretical structure.
We All Have All Five
Everyone has all five needs, but they are not necessarily equally strong.
For one person, Freedom may be especially strong. Another may place greater importance on Connection, Significance, Safety & Security, or Joy. No pattern is inherently better or healthier than another.
The question is not simply, Which needs do I have? We all have them.
A more useful question is:
Which needs are strongest for me, and how well is each one being satisfied in my life right now?
That is what the LifeFit Matrix is designed to explore.
Strength Is Not the Same as Satisfaction
A strong need does not automatically mean that need is well satisfied.
Someone with a very strong need for Connection may currently feel deeply connected to others, or they may feel isolated and dissatisfied.
Likewise, a need that is relatively less strong does not necessarily represent a problem simply because a person spends less time or energy satisfying it.
The LifeFit Matrix examines the relationship between the two.
There Is No “Best” Profile
The goal is not to score high on every need.
Your profile is not a grade, diagnosis, or personality type.
It is a way of seeing how your own pattern of needs fits with the life you are currently living.
